John Dawson has been a legal practitioner since 1985 with a broad spectrum legal practice across both state and federal jurisdictions focusing on commercial law, employment/workplace relations and aviation. Over 30 years he has acted for individuals, SMEs and sometimes institutions in transactional and litigious matters. He has been retained by victims of aircraft accidents to act on their behalf in Australia and overseas and has appeared in commissions of inquiry and coronial inquiries examining aircraft accidents. John’s long-standing interest in the aviation industry comes from his background as a pilot and a former employee of the Civil Aviation Authority working in Air Traffic Services. For more than a decade he lectured in aviation and employment law at the University of NSW and in the Diploma of Aviation at the Sydney Institute of Technology. His assistance to clients who have suffered a personal injury, wrongful act or who are locked in a dispute has first and foremost been to employ alternative methods of dispute resolution and pursue litigation as a last resort. This is reflected in his membership of a number of professional bodies. He is a member the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators (IAMA) and is accredited by IAMA as a mediator and arbitrator and is a member of the New South Wales Law Society Arbitration Committee and is accredited by the Law Society as a specialist in Employment and Industrial Law. John is a National Director and immediate past President of the Aviation Law Association of Australia and New Zealand and is an associate member of the Australian Society of Air Safety Investigators.
